Mike Wurm - Lures That Got Me To The Classic
Bitsy Bug
Editor's Note: Mike Wurm, a 51-year-old angler from Hot Springs, Arkansas, first fished competitively in 1978 and began on the Bassmasters Circuit in 1992. He has one win and 11 top-10 finishes in his career. This year he qualified for his seventh Bassmasters Classic.
Wurm: First and foremost, the Strike King Bitsy Bug has bailed me out more times than I can remember. It dates back to before the Bitsy Bug existed, when I made small 1/4-ounce jigs and hand-tied the rubber on myself. When Strike King decided to sponsor me, I kept telling them we needed a finesse jig, and they finally came out with the Bitsy Bug. The Bitsy Bug produces fish for me under any circumstance.
At Toledo Bend, I used the Bitsy Bug to stay in the running for the tournament, and I really thought I could win. Everybody was catching bass off of grass beds by throwing big spinner baits. On the last day of practice, I decided to go to the other side of the lake away from where everyone else was fishing. I pulled into this bay where there were a lot of boat docks. I began to throw the Bitsy Bug, and with one 35-minute pass I caught five bass. The first day of the tournament, after I fished the grassbeds, I went to the boat docks and ended up with 21 pounds of bass, all caught exclusively with the Bitsy Bug. I was using the 1/4-ounce green/crawfish color with a green pumpkin trailer.
