Mark Davis - Five Lures That Got Me To The Classic
Series 1 Crankbait
Editor's Note: Mark Davis, of Mount Ida, Arkansas, is ranked third by www.bassfan.com. He won the Angler-of-the-Year title in 1995, 1998 and 2001 and the 1995 Bassmasters Classic.
Question: What five baits helped you earn a spot in the Classic this year?
Davis: I didn't necessarily win a tournament with one particular bait, but one did help me a lot and put food on the table-the chartreuse Series 1 crankbait with a lime-green back. This is one lure you'll never catch me without. I'll have a Series 1 tied on to one of my rods whenever I find a place that bass are holding.
Question: Why was the Series 1 crankbait important?
Davis: We had a lot of spring tournaments this year, and often we had stained water where these tournaments were held. The Series 1 allowed me to cover a lot of water. I fished grass, wood and rocks, depending on where we were. The Series 1 helped put bass in my livewell, and I thought I was going to win on Lake Jordan in Montgomery, Alabama.
Question: What were you doing that made you think you could win with the Series 1?
Davis: I was catching big spotted bass by cranking points on the main lake. The fish were schooled-up, and I was catching a lot of them. The Series 1 looks like a shad and has an action that fish really like.
