Shaw Grigsby's Tournament Equipment Must-Haves
Five Baits I Always Carry
Editor's Note: Shaw Grigsby of Gainesville, Florida, has qualified for his tenth Bassmasters Classic. Grigsby has won 8 B.A.S.S. tournaments since turning pro in 1984. Shaw also has 40 top-10 finishes and has won the gold medal for bass fishing in ESPN's Great Outdoor Games.
Grigsby: I would never go anywhere without my spinner baits. The Pro-Model Spinner bait 3/8-ounce is as good as a bait gets. I would take the chartreuse/white, but if I was going to Texas, I would use red, and in Florida I would use gold. I use a gold/silver combination in either Colorado blades or Colorado willow blades.
Anywhere I go I'll take the Denny Brauer Flipping Tubes. These tubes are a mainstay for flipping and pitching into cover. But, black neon is my number-one color. In the Classic, I'll use Wild Thang Jr. in the green-pumpkin color as I have a lot of confidence in its ability. I'll have some 3X Zulus because they are versatile baits. You can fish it in clear water or stained water and catch fish. I've hammered fish on the blue glimmer/pearl belly Zulu bait. I'll have a Series 3 crankbait, and I will go with color 507, the chartreuse crawfish, as my number-one bait.
Another bait that has a chartreuse back and a white side with a scale-finish pattern that is a color 501 has also been good for me. Both the chartreuse craw the and 501 color work for me all the time. A Spit-N-King and a Diamond Shad go with me anywhere I go. Strike King has new Diamond Shad colors that are just awesome. In the past year, Strike King has made that the best lipless crankbait on the market. It has a very-high-pitched rattle in great colors, and I have loaded up on them.
