Entry 77-1
Meet Mr. Mike Wurm
Getting To Know Mike Wurm
Editor's Note: Have you ever wondered who these men are who run up and down highways across the nation catching little green fish for money? What are their lives like? Why do they do participate in professional bass fishing? What do their families think about them being away from home so much? We want you to meet and get to know the Strike King Pros, both as some of the best bass fishermen in the nation and also to learn what they're really like. This week you'll get to know Mike Wurm up close and personal.
Wurm: The only thing I don't like about professional bass fishing is traveling. I spend a lot of time pulling my boat across the country and live much of my life behind the wheel of an automobile. And while I'm on the road, I'm away from my family. But the upside is that we have our own little family on the road. There's a fraternity among professional fishermen because we all live in the same world. We take care of each other, cheer for each other and share problems with each other. We've created a family away from our families.
I'm gone for 15 week-long tournaments a year plus the days I work for my sponsors. My time on the road equals about three-quarters of the year, which is a long time to be away from your family. My family has adapted to my absence well. I call home every night, and my wife fills me in on what's going on with the family. Even though I'm not at home, I'm still very involved with my family. I talk to my daughters regularly, even though they're grown now, and we discuss their lives. While the life of a tournament fisherman has its glitz and glamour, we also spend a lot of lonely hours out on the road.
