Mr. Consistency And His Consistent Baits

I Like A Little

Editor's Note: Anyone can attempt to be a professional bass fisherman. Some anglers can bass fish on the professional circuit for a year or two until their money runs out or their patience and endurance takes flight, but one man consistently wins money and consistently fishes with the best of the best, Mike Wurm of Hot Springs, Arkansas. We asked Wurm what five baits this year had kept him competitive and in the money.

Wurm: I'll always have a Strike King spinner bait tied on a rod when I fish competitively. This year instead of fishing with the standard-size spinner bait, I've started fishing the new Compact Premier Pro-Model spinner baits. These Compact spinner baits cast really well, and because they appear to be smaller, even under tough fishing conditions, (which we had plenty of this season), the bass were biting.

My favorite color has always been white-and-chartreuse, and I have used the solid-white spinner bait a lot this year. Most of the time, I fish the 3/8-ounce-Compact Premier Pro-Model spinner bait, with a No. 4 willow leaf blade and a No. 2 Colorado blade. I cast this spinner bait around any type of cover that is above water level. I fish it around boat docks, lay-downs, grass and weeds. When I am fishing for smallmouth, I will upgrade to a 1/2 -ounce spinner bait. I can cast the 1/2-ounce spinner bait further, and with better results, because it is a heavier spinner bait for smallmouth.

In clear-water conditions where we often find smallmouth, I prefer to stay further away from the fish and make longer casts to keep from spooking them. I really do like this new Compact Premier Pro-Model spinner bait. I'm convinced if you start fishing it, you will be a fan too. I feel confident that I have caught some fish that I wouldn't have caught if I hadn't been using this smaller spinner bait.
