Fishing with Mark Davis and Strike King’s New Lures
Part 1: The King Kong
Editor’s Note: Mark Davis, of Mount Ida, Arkansas, ranked third by www.bassfan.com, has won Bassmaster Angler-of-the-Year titles in 1995, 1998 and 2001 and the 1995 Bassmasters Classic.
Question: Tell us about some of Strike King’s new lures you like.
Davis: I’m excited about Strike King’s new swim bait, the King Kong. I really like to fish it on main lake grass beds and long-running flat points, especially if those points have grass or timber on them. I’ll fish these areas by making long casts with 20- to 25-pound-test line. I like to swim the bait so it’ll wake as it wobbles from side to side, just on top of the water. This tactic is extremely deadly to use during the months of April, May and June, depending on the section of the country where you’re fishing.
Although I like this bait during the spawn and the post-spawn, it will catch bass during the pre-spawn too. Look for water temperatures in the high 50s because when the water begins to warm-up, big bass will crush that bait. The great thing about this big swim bait is that you’ll catch a lot of big stripers if you fish this bait in lakes holding stripers. It’ll also produce big hybrid striped bass. Most people don’t think of a swim bait as a spotted bass lure, but the spotted bass also will crush this new Strike King King Kong bait.
