Entry 304-3
Greg Hackney on Smith Mountain Lake
Editor’s Note: Strike King pro Greg Hackney of Gonzales, Louisiana, finished in fourth place in the BASS Elite Series Blue Ridge Brawl on Smith Mountain Lake in Moneta, Virginia, earning $15,000. Not only did Hackney earn points for the Bassmaster Classic and take home a big paycheck, he learned some new techniques for catching bass. And this week, Hackney will share what he’s learned with us.
Part 3: Day 2 of the Tournament
Question: Greg, what did you do on the second day of the tournament?
Hackney: The second day was very much like the first day, but I started in a different pocket in the lake that I’d never fished previously. I fished for bass that weren’t quite as big as the bass I targeted on the first day. I caught a limit really quickly and a 3 pounder fishing the Strike King Zero. I fished the bank by casting out in front of the boat, letting the Zero fall and then land on the bottom, while I used the trolling motor to look for bedding bass. Once I had my limit, I decided to fish for bigger bass.
Finally, in the afternoon, I found bigger bass and was able to upgrade my limit.
That afternoon I caught a 4-1/2-pound female and a decent-sized male bass. I caught the male bass first. The female bass wouldn’t move onto the nest as long as the male was there. But after I caught the male bass, she moved onto the bed and became very defensive since the male was gone. I only had to cast to that female bass three times to get it to bite. I caught both of those bass on the green-pumpkin-colored Strike King Coffee Tube. At the end of day two, I only had 14 pounds of bass and dropped to 15th place.
