Shaw Grigsby Fishes Salt Water with Strike King Lures
Editor’s Note: Strike King has secured a strong presence in the freshwater fishing market, but most anglers don’t know that Strike King also produces some of the best saltwater lures on the market today. Because Shaw Grigsby lives in Florida, he has been using many of the Strike King saltwater products to catch a wide variety of saltwater fish. This week, Grigsby will tell us what saltwater lures he’s been fishing, and what fish he’s catching when he fishes in salt water.
Part 1: Doing the Zulu
Question: Shaw, what five lures do you use the most when you’re fishing in salt water?
Grigsby: My number-one lure will be the 3X Zulu. Constructed with Cyber Flexxx material, the Zulu is extremely durable, and the lure just won’t tear-up. Too, the Zulu is extremely buoyant and resembles baitfish. Every fish that swims in salt water will eat a Zulu. I’ve caught redfish, speckled trout, tarpon, snook, jacks, barracuda, tuna and probably 20 more species of fish with the Zulu. Even cobia and snapper love the Zulu.
Question: How do you rig the Zulu?
Grigsby: Normally I rig it on a jighead. I use the Strike King Saltwater Flats jighead and vary the size of the jighead, depending on the water depth at which I’m fishing. If I’m fishing in shallow water, I’ll use the 1/8-ounce jighead, and if I’m fishing in deep water, I’ll use a 1/2-ounce jighead.
I’ve also used 1- to 1-1/2-ounce jigheads when I’ve fished really-deep salt water. I use those bigger jigheads when I’m fishing for snapper or around rigs for cobia. I also use the bigger jigheads when I fish with big hooks that will hold-up under the hard charge of a big tuna.
Question: What rod, reel and line do you use when you fish inshore?
Grigsby: Most of the time I’ll use a 7- to a 7-1/2-foot, medium-action Quantum Cabo PT saltwater rod, with a Quantum Cabo PT 40 spinning reel. I’ll occasionally use the Quantum Energy PT baitcasting reel
