Strike King Lure Company Tips and Tactics

Spit-N-King

Several years ago, Strike King set out to design the best poppin’, chuggin’, spttin’ topwater lure possible. We interviewed our Pro Fishing Team and they wanted a lure that would “spit” and “spray” more than those available on the market. They, and others, complained about spending long periods of time modifying the models then available. Strike King’s Spit-N-King is exactly what they wanted. The specially designed front end is horizontally oriented and cut to maximize “spit” and “spray” during the retrieve. This better imitates a fleeing baitfish. Almost any kind of movement makes the bait work properly. Simply give the lure a twitch or a short to medium length, smooth, yet fairly quick sweep to make it work unlike anything you’ve tried right out of the package. Hang on, we think it’s the one the bass have been looking for!

  • 3/8 oz. Weight
  • 2 1/2" long body length
  • New style face design is horizontally oriented and cut to maximize the “spit” and “spray” during retrieve
  • Premier holographic colors
  • Lifelike 3-D eyes
  • Premium tinsel tail hook
  • Internal free-floating rattles

In Strike King Journal entry #7, Mark Rose talked about using Strike King's Spit-N-King...

Question: Backwater areas are usually covered in timber and tree stumps. Give me three tactics for fishing backwater areas.

Answer: First of all, in miles and miles of stump rows, you need to try to find something to differentiate one stump row from the other. Try to pinpoint a channel swing or deeper stumps, or shallower stumps, and let the weather conditions guide you. In hot weather, the fish may be suspended up on the stumps. You may try throwing a Strike King swimming jig around. If you feel like the fish are down on the bases of stumps, try throwing a tube or a Deep Series 6-crankbait out on the base of the stumps. If you feel like the fish are right up on top, throw a Spit-N-King. Try different things. Every stump isn't going to have bass at the same depth.

In Strike King Journal entry #12, Lee Knight talked about using Strike King's Spit-N-King...

Question: You go to the lake, but rain's been falling all night. The weather has been clear for three days beforehand. How are you going to catch the fish?

Answer: If the weather was clear for three days, then all of the lake shouldn't be muddy. If it's been raining, the sky should be pretty dark. That's the kind of day I like -- dark and overcast. That kind of day allows me to use the fast-moving lures that I like: spinner baits, buzzbaits, Spit-N-Kings.

In Strike King Journal entry #14, George Cochran talked about using Strike King's Spit-N-King...

Cochran: Another lure I like is a top-water bait made by Strike King, which I think is one of the hottest lures on the market, called the Spit-N-King. It's been really sensational in the summertime. When you're fishing out in open water over structure, or even around shallow cover, it's been one of the hottest bass producers all over the country.

In Strike King Journal entry #23, Shaw Grigsby talked about using Strike King's Spit-N-King...

Question: Have you had any salt-water experiences with Strike King baits where a lure saved your day of fishing?

Grigsby: Absolutely. I was fishing on the East Coast of Florida around the Cape Canaveral area. My guide was Shawn Foster. He's accustomed to catching 30-, 40- and 50-pound redfish. He may be one of the best redfish anglers I know. I wanted to see how these Strike King baits would work on redfish.

Shawn said, "To catch redfish, you've got to have some really big baits," and he held out a handful of lures that were really big and bulky. I said, "I really want to try Strike King's Spit-N-King -- a little lure about 3-inches long that spits, darts back and forth and has a really erratic movement. This was before Strike King developed the Spin-N-Mullet.

The first spot we went to was an oyster bar with rocks on the shore line. Foster started throwing his big top-water lures, and I cast behind him with my little Spit-N-King. I had only twitched the bait about three times when I saw this big wake coming up behind the bait. All of a sudden, I caught this huge redfish. Then I caught three more really big redfish on the next three casts.

Foster couldn't believe that those really big redfish would take that little Spit-N-King. He was so convinced about how effective that little lure was that he asked me to leave him a sackful of them because he had a redfish tournament to fish that upcoming weekend.

That little Spit-N-King made the day because I was fishing with one of the top redfish fishermen in the nation, and he was so totally convinced that you had to have really big top-water lures to catch big redfish that he wouldn't even consider fishing with my little Spit-N-King until the bait proved him wrong. But then when he saw the redfish-catching ability of the Spit-N-King, he didn't just want one, he wanted a sackful.

This lure has a lot of action; it makes a lot of noise; the redfish can locate it easily; and redfish can get this lure in its mouth. So, on this day, not only did the Spit-N-King save the day, it gave me an opportunity to say - "I told you so."
