5 Best Fall Baits for Fishing the Southeast with Andy Montgomery

Strike King pro Andy Montgomery highlights his five top baits for fishing in the southeast during fall.

“When fishing in the southeast, I think about one thing and that’s shad imitating lures,” says Montgomery. During fall, shad are typically migrating toward creeks, coves, and pockets. Montgomery finds a lot of success in the fall with covering water baits, he shares.

Strike King’s Tour Grade Spinnerbait is a top choice for Montgomery on those windy, cloudy days when a little extra flash is needed to draw in a strike.

Strike King’s Thunder Cricket is one of Montgomery’s all-time favorite baits for a few reasons. The Thunder Cricket is most effective when it’s bright and sunny, for target fishing, or even when fishing in the shade, shares Montgomery.

The Strike King KVD 1.0 truly shines in the fall, Montgomery says. While the KVD 1.0 is a bit smaller than the fan favorite KVD 1.5, Montgomery uses the KVD 1.0 to reel in huge fish. “This little crankbait is deadly in the fall of the year,” Montgomery assures.

“There’s no better time of year to fish topwater than in the fall,” says Montgomery. His top two choices for topwater baits in fall are the KVD Sexy Dawg Hard Knock and the Skip’N Buzz.

Strike King’s KVD Sexy Dawg Hard Knock is a deadly walking bait. “No better way to imitate a shad than a walking bait,” shares Montgomery. The unique knock of the Hard Knock gives fish a different sound that can often times result in more bites and more fish.

Montgomery loves buzzbait fishing in the fall and the new Strike King Skip’N Buzz is the best buzzbait for any conditions, cloudy or sunny. “All you need is a little bit of wind and a Skip’N Buzz,” says Montgomery. He utilizes a Rage Swimmer as a trailer on his Skip’N Buzz, but also suggests a Rage Toad if looking for a larger presentation.
