Mark Davis shares his top three locations to look for pre-spawn bass and how to fish for them.
Mark Davis lives in central Arkansas, where there are a lot of highland reservoirs, like Lake Ouachita. The surrounding areas of those lakes fish nearly the same that during the pre-spawn time of the year.
When the fish start to move, Mark Davis loves to do a lot of cranking. The first good warming trend is a perfect time for a Strike King 1.5 Square bill. This bait can be fished around rock and wood with the action that the fish like during the pre-spawn.
The next lure that Mark Davis fishes in the pre-spawn is a jerk bait. The jerk bait works well in places like Ouachita, Bull Shoals, or any of the highland reservoirs in Alabama.
Chartreuse shad is Mark Davis’s favorite color to use when fishing a KVD Jerkbait 300 Deep. 10-to-12-pound line will allow for a long cast and for the bait to get down deep. Fish this jerk bait on boat docks, windy points, and windy banks to catch a lot of fish during the pre-spawn.
The third best lure to fish with during the pre-spawn on Missouri lakes or highland Lakes with clear water is a football jig. A football jig is one of Mark Davis’s go-to baits. This bait can be fished a lot faster than most people think. Cast it out and wind it slowly on the bottom, just like slow rolling a spinner bait. A lot of water can be covered in a day's time fishing a football jig this way.
These three different lures and techniques catch a lot of fish during the pre-spawn, anywhere from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Alabama, or Missouri.
