Walking Baits - Shallow to Deep Part 1 with Andy Montgomery

A great choice throughout many months of the year, walking baits can produce explosive strikes and attract big bites. The KVD Sexy Dawg Jr., KVD Sexy Dawg, and KVD Mega Dawg excel when fished over certain depths, providing a great option no matter the fishing situation.

Walking baits are a “straight forward” bait in the words of Andy Montgomery. The smaller sizes of walking baits are most successful in shallow waters while mid-size walking baits are best utilized in moderate water depths. The larger walking baits are best suited for deep waters and rougher conditions.

When the waters are calm and conditions are sunny, Montgomery will reach for a KVD Sexy Dawg Jr. in shallow water. “You can lay this dude in there really quiet, and I have caught a lot of big fish on this little bait. It’s a real subtle walk and it just triggers a bite under tougher conditions,” shares Montgomery. The KVD Sexy Dawg Jr. is also likely to generate some huge bites in slightly deeper water when schooling fish are chasing smaller bait with slick water conditions and no wind. “In super calm conditions or super shallow, go with the little one,” Montgomery says.

Strike King’s premium “walk-the-dog” topwater lure provides great action and can handle slightly deeper depths and more challenging conditions than the KVD Sexy Dawg Jr. The original KVD Sexy Dawg has three hooks and for a better hook up ratio and if any wind is present, Montgomery will use the KVD Sexy Dawg in the original size to generate bites.

“If you are fishing really rough conditions with a lot of wind, or if you’re fishing in super deep water, this big boy will call ‘em up from the depths,” shares Montgomery. The largest of the Sexy Dawg family, the KVD Mega Dawg, attract fish that are not high in the water column. The KVD Mega Dawg works well in attracting large fish that are deeper, maybe over a brush pile, and excels in rough water conditions. “I use the KVD Mega Dawg anytime it’s rough, fishing over deep water, or – I’m going to throw one more tid bit in there – if there is a lot of gizzard shad present,” Montgomery advises.
